A light summer color palette is made of light, softly cool colors like powder blue, lavender, rose pink and seafoam. It suits people whose coloring is mostly light with a cool lean, such as ash blonde or light brown hair, blue or gray eyes, and skin with a pink or neutral cast. Dark, heavy and very warm colors tend to overpower this season.

Every swatch shows its name and hex code. Screens vary, so these are illustrative, and fabric or makeup in daylight is the real test.

Use these palettes as a starting point, not a verdict. Lighting and your screen settings both shape what you see, and an in-person consultation with a trained artist is the best way to confirm what flatters you.

What is a Light Summer?

Light Summer is the lightest of the Summer seasons. Its main quality is lightness, followed by a cool, gentle softness. Hair is often light ash blonde, champagne blonde or light ash brown, and it may look sun-faded at the ends. Eyes are commonly soft blue, gray-blue, gray-green or light hazel with gray flecks. Skin usually reads light with a pink, rosy or neutral undertone.

The overall impression is airy and delicate. Light Summers often look lovely in colors that seem almost watercolor-like, and dark or saturated colors near the face can feel like they’re wearing the person rather than the other way around.

The light summer color palette, color by color

The core colors are pale and cool with a soft finish. Pale Blush and Soft Rose are gentle pinks that bring color to the cheeks without looking loud. Pale Orchid and Soft Lavender are classic Light Summer shades, airy purples with a cool, pretty feel. Pale Periwinkle and Soft Sky give you two light blues, Pale Aqua is a cool, minty blue-green, and Soft Aqua is a soft seafoam.

Because every shade sits in the same light, cool band, they combine easily. Soft Lavender with Soft Sky, or Pale Blush with Pale Aqua, looks calm and coordinated without any effort.

Neutrals and accents for Light Summer

Light Summer neutrals are Snow, Pearl, a soft Dove Gray with a hint of lavender, and a gentle Camel cocoa. Snow replaces stark white, Pearl and Dove Gray are perfect for suiting and knits, and the cocoa neutral works where you’d otherwise use brown or black.

The accents are Clear Raspberry, Clear Azure, Clear Violet and Clear Teal. They’re stronger than the core colors but still soft enough for this season. A Clear Raspberry lip or a Clear Azure scarf adds just enough definition to a pastel outfit.

Makeup ideas for a Light Summer

Light Summers usually look best in soft, cool, sheer makeup. Rose and cool pink blush, berry-tinted lip balms, mauve pinks and soft raspberry lips tend to look natural. For eyes, try taupe, soft plum, gray-brown, pewter and lavender shadows with a soft gray-brown or charcoal liner. Very warm bronzers, orange-based corals and heavy black liner can look harsh.

A satin or soft-glow skin finish often suits this season. Many Light Summers find neutral or cool undertone foundations blend best, but every complexion is different, so check shades on your jawline in daylight before committing.

Hair color ideas for Light Summer

Ash blonde, champagne, pearl blonde, soft beige blonde and light ash brown are common favorites. Soft, cool highlights can brighten the face without adding warmth. Very golden, copper or brassy tones can make cool coloring look sallow, and very dark colors can feel heavy.

A gloss or toner between color appointments helps keep blonde from turning brassy, which matters for this season. If you’re planning a change before your wedding, our wedding beauty timeline planner helps you set the dates.

A light summer color palette for your wedding

Light Summer brides often look beautiful in soft white, pearl or blush gowns. A dreamy pastel wedding fits the palette perfectly: bridesmaids in Soft Lavender, Soft Sky or Pale Blush, garden roses, sweet peas and hydrangeas, and silver, white gold or pearl jewelry.

For bridal makeup, think luminous skin, rosy cheeks, soft taupe and plum on the eyes, and a sheer rose or berry lip. Our bridal makeup service tailors every look to your coloring, and your hair and makeup trial run lets you see it in real light.

Colors to be careful with

For Light Summer, the colors to be careful with are warm and strong: Tangerine, Neon Bronze, Neon Rust and a deep Dark Terracotta. These have far more warmth and intensity than your coloring, so they can make skin look ruddy or tired near your face. If you love an orange or rust shade, wear it away from your face, like in a skirt or shoes.

Very dark colors like black and deep brown can also overpower light, cool coloring. Charcoal-free outfits in Dove Gray or soft navy usually feel easier.

Light Summer or Light Spring?

These two share lightness, so the difference is temperature. Light Summer leans cool, so lavender, powder blue and rose pink look fresh, and silver often beats gold. Light Spring leans warm, so peach, apricot and butter yellow look better, and gold often wins.

Hold Soft Lavender next to a light peach in daylight. If the lavender makes your skin look clear and the peach makes it look yellow, Light Summer is likely. If the peach looks rosy and fresh, compare the light spring color palette.

Building outfits with Light Summer colors

A simple formula is one light neutral, one pastel and one clear accent. Pearl trousers, a Soft Sky shirt and a Clear Raspberry lip, or a Snow dress with a Soft Lavender cardigan and silver jewelry, both look effortless. Prints work well when they’re soft, light and low contrast, like a small floral on a pale background.

Jewelry, metals and finishing touches

Silver, white gold, platinum and soft rose gold often suit Light Summers, along with pearls, moonstone, rose quartz and pale aquamarine. Brushed or satin finishes usually look softer than high shine. For glasses, try soft gray, rose, lavender or clear frames rather than heavy black, which can feel harsh on light, cool coloring.

Fabrics matter as well. Light Summer colors often look loveliest in soft, matte or gently lustrous textures like chiffon, cotton voile, cashmere and washed silk. Very shiny satins and stiff, high-gloss fabrics can make pastel shades look harder than they really are.

What colors look best on a Light Summer?

Light, cool and soft colors like powder blue, lavender, rose pink, seafoam and pearl gray usually look best. They match the lightness and gentle coolness of Light Summer coloring.

Black is often heavy against light, cool coloring, so soft navy, slate or Dove Gray are gentler choices. If you love black, wear it lower on the body.

Is gold or silver better for a Light Summer?

Silver, white gold and soft rose gold usually look best, because they echo cool coloring. Bright yellow gold can look a little strong.
