A cool winter color palette is built from crisp, clearly cool colors, from icy pastels to strong jewel tones like fuchsia, royal blue, emerald and true red. It suits people whose coloring is strongly cool with noticeable contrast, such as dark ash or black hair, cool eyes and skin with a pink or blue cast. Warm, golden and earthy colors tend to look muddy on this season.

Every swatch shows its name and hex code. Screens vary, so these are illustrative, and fabric or makeup in daylight is the real test.

Use these palettes as a starting point, not a verdict. Lighting and your screen settings both shape what you see, and an in-person consultation with a trained artist is the best way to confirm what flatters you.

What is a Cool Winter?

Cool Winter, sometimes called True Winter, is the coolest of the Winters. Its main quality is temperature, with a crisp clarity that lets it carry strong color. Hair is often dark ash brown, cool black or silver-gray. Eyes are commonly cool brown, gray-blue, icy blue or cool green with a dark rim, and skin often has a pink, rosy or cool neutral cast across many depths.

The overall impression is crisp and elegant, with medium to high contrast. Many Cool Winters notice that warm colors like camel, orange and mustard make their skin look yellow, while fuchsia, royal blue, black and pure white make them look sharp and awake.

The cool winter color palette, color by color

The core colors are cool and saturated. Icy Red is a cool, blue-based red, and Crisp Raspberry is a strong berry pink. Icy Fuchsia and Crisp Violet bring vivid, cool purples. Icy Midnight is a royal cobalt blue, and Crisp Navy is a cool, clear navy. Icy Teal is a bright, cool aqua, and Crisp Teal is a clean emerald green.

Because they share a blue undertone and high clarity, these shades combine easily with each other and with black and white. Crisp Navy with Icy Fuchsia, or Icy Midnight with Snow, looks polished and modern.

Neutrals and accents for Cool Winter

Cool Winter neutrals are Snow, a cool Dove Gray, Slate and Ink. Like Deep Winter, this season can usually wear true black and pure white beautifully, and navy and charcoal are excellent everyday alternatives. Cool, blue-gray tones look much better than beige or camel.

The accents here are a little different: Crisp Rose, Crisp Sky, Crisp Lavender and Cool Sky are icy pastels. Cool Winters often look lovely in these very light, cool tints when they’re paired with a darker color, like an icy pink blouse under a navy suit.

Makeup ideas for a Cool Winter

Cool Winters can wear clean, cool and defined makeup. Blush in cool pink, berry or fuchsia, lips in blue-red, fuchsia, raspberry, cool plum and rose, and eyeshadow in silver, charcoal, navy, plum, cool taupe and icy shimmer all suit this season. Black liner, a defined brow and well-separated lashes often look natural rather than heavy.

Warm bronzers, orange corals and golden shimmer can look muddy on cool skin. Contour with a cool, gray-brown tone if you use it at all. Many Cool Winters find cool or neutral-pink undertone foundations blend best, so test on your jawline in daylight before choosing.

Hair color ideas for Cool Winter

Cool dark brown, ash espresso, soft black, blue-black and natural silver often flatter Cool Winters. Many look striking as they gray, with crisp silver or white hair adding to their natural contrast. Golden highlights, copper and warm caramel can fight with cool coloring.

A cool gloss helps keep dark hair from turning warm in strong sun. If you’re planning a color change for your wedding, our wedding beauty timeline planner helps you place the appointment with room to adjust.

A cool winter color palette for your wedding

Cool Winter brides often look stunning in bright white or soft white with silver detail. The palette suits crisp, elegant weddings: bridesmaids in Crisp Navy, Icy Fuchsia or Crisp Teal, florals in white roses, deep purple anemones, blue delphinium and silver eucalyptus, and silver, platinum or diamond jewelry.

For bridal makeup, a flawless, even base, defined eyes in charcoal or plum, cool pink cheeks and a blue-red or berry lip suit this season beautifully. Our bridal hair and makeup page shows how we tailor looks, and you can test a bold red at your hair and makeup trial run.

Cool skin can show redness, especially in heat. A light, cool-toned color corrector under foundation keeps the finish even without adding warmth, which helps in close-up photos.

Colors to be careful with

For a Cool Winter, the colors to be careful with are warm and golden: Tangerine, Marigold, Coral and Olive. These carry strong yellow undertones, so they can make cool skin look sallow or tired near the face. If you love one of them, wear it in shoes, a bag or a skirt, and keep a cool color near your face.

Camel, beige and warm browns can also look flat. Charcoal, navy and gray usually look more like you.

Cool Winter or Cool Summer?

Both seasons are clearly cool, so the difference is clarity and contrast. Cool Winter suits crisp, saturated cool colors and usually has more contrast between hair, skin and eyes. Cool Summer suits softer, slightly muted cool colors like rose and cornflower, with gentler contrast.

Hold Icy Fuchsia next to a soft dusty rose in daylight. If the fuchsia makes you look awake and the rose looks dull, Cool Winter is likely. If the rose looks more natural and the fuchsia feels loud, compare the cool summer color palette.

Building outfits with Cool Winter colors

Cool Winters look great in crisp contrast. Try Ink trousers with a Snow shirt and a Crisp Raspberry lip, or a Crisp Navy dress with an Icy Teal scarf and silver earrings. Icy pastels paired with dark neutrals, like Crisp Lavender with Charcoal, are a signature Cool Winter combination. Sleek fabrics and clean graphic prints suit this season well.

Jewelry, metals and finishing touches

Silver, white gold, platinum and polished steel usually suit Cool Winters, along with diamond, sapphire, amethyst, ruby and crystal. Shiny, polished finishes often look better than antiqued ones. For glasses, black, navy, cool gray or clear frames tend to look sharp. Even nail polish follows the palette, so a cool red, berry or soft icy pink usually looks more finished than coral or nude beige.
